Saying ‘Taqabbal Allāhu minnā wa minkum’ at ‘Eid

Know that the narrations attributed to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم regarding saying ‘Taqabbal Allāhu minnā wa minkum’ are not proven (see al-Silsilah al-Ḍa’īfah (5666) by shaykh al-Albānī & Tawḍīḥ al-Aḥkām by shaykh Zubayr ‘Alī Zaī (3/118-119)), however, it is proven from his companions and those after them which show its permissiblity. I have tried to gather what has been reported authentically from them and Allah is the source of help.

Muḥammad bin Ziyād (Tābi’ī) narrated:
We would approach Abū Umāmah (a companion) and Wāthilah bin al-Asqa’ (a companion) in (‘Eid) al-Fiṭr and al-Aḍḥā and say to them “may Allah accept from you” so they would say “wa minkum wa minkum” (And you too, and you too)
[Mukhtaṣar ikhtilāf al-‘ulamā 4/385; Isnād Ḥasan]

Shaykh Zubayr ‘Alī Zaī said: “In this sanad, Yaḥyā bin ‘uthmān bin Ṣāliḥ and Nu’aym bin Ḥammād, both have been deemed trustworthy by the majority (of ḥādīth scholars) therefore they are ḥasan al-Ḥadīth and the rest of the sanad is Ṣaḥīḥ” [Tawḍīḥ al-Aḥkām (3/119)]

Shu’bah bin al-Ḥajjāj said:
Yūnus bin ‘Ubayd (Tābi’ī) met me on the day of ‘Eid and said: “Taqabbal Allāhu minnā wa mink”
[al-Du’ā by al-Ṭabarānī (929); Isnād Ḥasan]

Shaykh Zubayr ‘Alī Zaī said: “The narrator of this narration, al-Ḥasan bin ‘Alī al-Ma’marī, is Ṣadūq, ḥasan al-Ḥadīth in the narrations which are not deemed munkar. And in this narration, no inkār (denouncement) is proven. See lisān al-Mīzān with my footnotes (2/414-415)” [Tawḍīḥ al-Aḥkām (3/120)]

‘Alī bin thābit said:
I asked Mālik bin Anas (D. 179) about the saying of the people ‘Taqabbal Allāhu minnā wa mink’ on the day of ‘Eid so he said “This matter has not ceased (to be practiced) amongst us, I do not see any issue with it”
[al-Thiqāt 9/90; Isnād Ḥasan]

Shaykh Zubayr ‘Alī Zaī said: “And the sanad is ḥasan” [Tawḍīḥ al-Aḥkām (3/120)]

Imām Abū Dawūd (D. 275) said:
I heard Aḥmad (bin Ḥanbal) being asked about their saying in the day of ‘Eid “may Allah accept from us and you”, he said: “I hope there is no issue in this”
[Masāil Abī Dawūd (436)]

al-Ṭaḥawī (D. 321) quoted from his contemporary scholars that:
(Abu Bakrah) Bakkār (D. 270), al-Muzanī (D. 264), Abu Ja’far (Aḥmad) bin abī ‘Imrān (D. 280) and Yūnus bin ‘Abd al-A’lā (D. 264) would give greetings on ‘Eid and reply to it similarly to the one who made Du’ā for them.
[Mukhtaṣar ikhtilāf al-‘ulamā 4/385]

Ibn Baṭṭah (D. 387) said after mentioning several practices of the Muslims:
And likewise the people meeting at the end of the month of Ramaḍān saying to each other ‘may Allah accept from us and you’, with this, the way of the Muslims has carried on and upon it their practices proceeded and the later ones took from their former ones (salaf)
[al-Ibānah al-Kubrā 2/871]

Shaykh Zubayr ‘Alī Zaī said after quoting some of the aforementioned texts:
“We come to know from these Āthār (texts) that saying ‘Taqabbal Allāhu minnā wa mink’ (and congratulating) to each other on the day of ‘Eid is permissible”
[Tawḍīḥ al-Aḥkām (3/120)]
