[29] And with the same chain of narration from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Was-Sallam) said, “Whoever stands in Ramadhan with belief and the intention of receiving reward, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.”

[GRADING] – [SAHIH]

Ibn Shihab az-Zuhri clarified hearing (this hadith from Humayd Ibn Abd ar-Rahman Ibn Awf) in Nasa’i ((3/201,202) hadith (no.1604))

[REFERENCES] – [AGREED UPON]

Al-Muwatta (Yahya’s narration 1/113 hadith no.247 lengthy, book 6, chapter 1, hadith no.2 from the hadith of Ibn Shihab from Abu Salamah Ibn Abdurahman Ibn Awf from Abu Hurayrah) at-Tamhid (7/95), al-Istidhkar: (no.218, no.219)

Transmitted by Bukhari (no.2009) and Muslim (173/759) from the hadith of Malik.

[UNDERSTANDING FROM THE HADITH]

1) Here the meaning of Qiyam (standing) is Qiyam of Ramadhan (Tarawih, Tahajud). The noble Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Was-Sallam) said about the Qiyam Ramadhan that, “Indeed, whoever stands (praying) with the Imam until he finished, then it is recorded for him that he prayed the whole night.” (Sunan at-Tirmidhi: (no.806) and its chain is authentic and Ibn Khuzaimah authenticated it: (no.2206), and Ibn Hibban, al-Muwarid: (no.919) and Ibn al-Jarud: (no.403 and Tirmidhi said: this hadith is Hasan Sahih)

2) Umar (RadhiAllaahu Anhu) commanded Ubay Ibn Ka’b (RadhiAllaahu Anhu) and Tamim ad-Dari (RadhiAllaahu Anhu) to lead the people in prayer in 11 rakats. (Muwatta Imam Malik Yahya’s narration 1/115 hadith no.249 and its chain is authentic, and Nimawi said in Athar as-Sunan: (no.775) “And its chain is authentic” and Tahawi referenced it in Ma’ani al-Athar (1/293)

3) Sa’ib Ibn Zayd (RadhiAllaahu Anhu) said, “In the lifetime of Umar Ibnul Khattab (RadhiAllaahu Anhu) we used to stand (Qiyam Ramadhan, Tarawih, Tahajud) for 11 rakahs. (Sunan Sa’id Ibn Mansur referenced by al-Hawi lil-Fatwa (1/349) and its chain is authentic)

In comparison to this the narration of Khalid Ibn Mukhlid (Ma’rifatus Sunan Wal Athar (2/305) hadith (no.1365) is [Shadh] (weak).

4) Tahtawi Hanafi writes, “Because without a shadow of a doubt the Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Was-Sallam) did not pray 20 (rakahs) rather he prayed 8 rakahs. (Hashiyyah Tahtawi Alal Durul Mukhtar (1/295)

5) Abu Bakr Ibn al-Arabi al-Maliki (died 543H) said, “And what is correct is that 11 rakahs should be prayed (this is) the prayer and standing of the Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Was-Sallam) and all the number (of rakahs) other than from this have no basis.” (Aridhatul Ahwadhi Sharh Sunan at-Tirmidhi (4/19))

6) The reward for qiyam (standing) is conditional to belief and sincerity. Also see my book “ Ta’dad Rakat Qiyam Ramadhan Ka Tahqiqi Ja’izah (An Overview of the verification of the number of rakahs for Qiyam Ramadhan)”
